What To Do If Your Toilet Won't Flush

What to do of your toilet won't flush

When a problem with your toilet occurs it is important to find a solution to it as soon as possible to prevent inconvenience and further damage happening from the toilet not flushing or just being blocked. If you are quite good at DIY you may want to attempt to fix the problem yourself, below are a few tips and bits of advice to help you diagnose the problem and get the toilet back in working order as soon as possible. Remember if you aren't confident, want advice or just want us to come and get the problem sorted for you you can call us 24hours a day on 01484 500002.

Firstly diagnose what the problem is with your toilet. Is your toilet filling up in the pan when flushed and not draining away at all? Is there not enough water going into the toilet when flushed to get rid of the waste? Or is it simply not flushed at all when you use the handle or the flush button? Depending on which one of these questions applies to you will determine what part of the toilet you need to focus your attention on.

Is your toilet not flushing?

When you operate the toilet handle does the toilet flush? If it doesn't firstly take the lid off the toilet cistern and check that the handle is attached to the siphon (the siphon will be located in the middle of the cistern) if the handle is attached to the siphon and still not flushing you will need to replace the siphon. You will be able to purchase a siphon from local DIY shops('BNQ' or screwfix). Firstly to fit the new siphon you will need to turn off the water supply, drain down the cistern you can do this by simply using a sponge to soak up the water and keep doing so until all water is removed from the toilet cistern, you can then unscrew the cistern from the screws into the wall and the unscrew the fixings between the cistern and the toilet pan. Once you have the cistern follow the instruction on the siphon packet to insure you use the correct seals etc.

Once fitted, re-assemble the toilet, and restore the water supply. Make sure to flush the toilet enough times to insure there are no leaks coming from behind the toilet or from the gap between the toilet pan and cistern. Also make sure there are no leaks coming from the supply pipe, if this is the case you may need a new washer installing onto the connection between the fill valves and the connector. If you aren't confident in doing this then feel free to give us a call and we will come out and get your toilet back up and running. You can get us at anytime on 01484 500002.

Is the water in the toilet backing up when it's flushed?

If your waste is not flushing at all, the most common cause is a blockage in your toilet pan. If you're comfortable enough doing so, this is a certainly a problem that in most cases can easily be solved on your own as long as you own a plunger. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and find your plunger, the aim is to put enough pressure down the toilet to dislodge the blockage. Firmly press the plunger down the toilet and plunge away until the blockage is cleared!

Remember if you are struggling and want us to come and sort the problem for you or you want a bit more advice before trying to fix the problem yourself you can get us on our Beau Plumbing&Tiling 24hour number 01484 500002.
